More movie news for Alexander Skarsgård! Yesterday was news on casting for Tarzan, and today there is news on The Giver.

UPDATE: Alex’s management confirms that yes, this is true: Alex will play the role of Jonas’s father in the film The Giver.

Variety reported today (September 27, 2013):

Taylor Swift is the latest addition to the cast of Phil Noyce’s “The Giver.”

The Weinstein Company and Walden Media’s adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1993 YA novel stars Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges. Streep will play Chief Elder, while Bridges will be the title character.

Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard, Odeya Rush and Cameron Monaghan round out the cast of the dystopian drama.

Swift will play Rosemary, the last teen mentored by The Giver before he meets Jonas.

The multi Grammy-winning singer has already gotten her feet wet in the film biz. She had a small role in 2010′s “Valentine’s Day” and provided the voice of Audrey for “The Lorax.”

The film, which is written by Michael Mitnick, will start filming in Cape Town (South Africa) on Oct. 7. It’s set to hit theaters on Aug. 15, 2014.

Entertainment Weekly has a breakdown of the roles and actors playing them:

The Weinstein Company announced Swift’s casting today in a release that also names the rest of the film’s principals, many of whom have been attached to The Giver for months. They include Australian actor Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, a boy living in a colorless dystopian world; Jeff Bridges as The Giver, Jonas’s mentor (as well as one of the film’s producers); Meryl Streep as the Chief Elder of Jonas’s community; Katie Holmes as Jonas’s mother; Alexander Skarsgard as Jonas’s father; Cameron Monaghan as Jonas’s best friend Asher; and Odeye Rush as Jonas’s friend and love interest Fiona.

What is The Giver about?

Story is based on the popular Lois Lowry young adult novel which is set in a dystopian world that is uprooted when a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world. Streep would be playing the Chief Elder who keeps things in control. (source)
