Here’s a detailed plot outline of the live-action adaptation of Hasbro’s board game “Battleship”, directed by Peter Berg (“Hancock”) and written by Jon e Erich Hoeber (“RED”).
“Alex (Taylor Kitsch) is the son of a United States Air Force Captain. Following his father’s death in a mysterious plane crash in the beaches of Honolulu, Alex is adopted by his father’s best friend, United States Navy Lieutenant Christopher Hopper, and becomes best friends with his adoptive brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgård). He grows up to become a thrill-seeking daredevil member of the Navy alongside Stone.
Alex is engaged to Samantha “Sam” Shane (Brooklyn Decker), a physical therapist and the daughter of the no-nosense Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson), who believes Alex to be a loose cannon. In the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, Alex, Stone and Admiral Shane participate of joint fleet exercises with the Japanese Navy, represented by Alex’s rival Captain Yugi Nagata (Tadanobu Asano). During the exercises, six meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere. Five crash-land in Hawaiaan seas. One crash-lands in Tokyo and destroys all of it. The Japanese government mistakes this for an attack of the American government and prepares to retaliate with a full nuclear response, which would signal the beginning of World War III.
The meteors actually are vehicles for the Regents, alien creaturs who communicate by touch and have come to Earth to steal our water reserves and transport to their dying desert-like planet. Using a jamming device, the creatures block all communications between countries, causing worldwide chaos, and create an impenetrable cloud of thunder and lightning that prevents anyone from reaching an island where their foot soldiers – The Thugs -, led by a monstruous Commander and protected by virtually invincible war machines know as the Shredders, which only attack when their target represents a threat, are building a communication tower that’ll allow them to contact the rest of their armada and guide them to Earth.
However, three ships commanded by Admiral Shane – Two Navy Destroyers and an Aircraft Carrier – manage to enter the aliens’ perimeter before the force field is built, and are given the task to stop the aliens. In response to this, the creatures deploy the Stinger, smaller ships that can “jump” and easily infiltrate and sabotage enemy vehicles, while Sam tries to prevent the communications tower from being built and the Japanese from accidentally starting World War III.”
The cast also includes John Tui as Alex’s best friend, a gigantic Samoan Navy soldier nicknamed “Beast”; Rihanna as acerbic-tongued communications officer Raikes; Jesse Plemons as geeky newcomer communications officer Ordy; Josh Pence as Navy Chief Moore; and Peter MacNicol as the Secretary of Defense.
“Battleship” is produced by Universal Pictures and will be released in May 18, 2012.
