Thank you to True Blood Nester & Polish correspondent, Joanna ‘Teahead” Bogusławska.
Long awaited season 3 of „True Blood” starts in Poland and it includes the sexiest Swedish actor, Alexander Skarsgard. Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgard was born on August 25th 1976 in Stockholm as one of the six children of a Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard (Alexander has had a step-brother Ossian since a year). He started his career as an 8-year-old boy and he soon became the most popular child actor in Sweden. In 1989 he stopped his career and came back to acting 10 years later. He became famous around the world for his roles in HBO’s “Generation Kill” and “True Blood”.
Has “True Blood” made you famous more in America or in your native Sweden?
Rather in America where I have become popular within days. Hardly ever anyone has known my previous roles, but the one in “True Blood” created many opportunities for me.
You grew up in an artistic family. Your father is a famous actor. How do you recall your childhood?
When I was a small boy I thought that all families were like mine. I used to spent a lot of time in theater. It helped me a lot to find my own way as an actor. As a teenager I traveled with my father a lot, I was living in Budapest for 6 months. That was great, because I would get my pocket money in Swedish coronas, so after exchanging the money I was really rich. During those days the very first McDonald was opened in Budapest, people were waiting with whole families in lines, dressed up nicely, just to buy a cheeseburger. I was able to dine in McDonald every day.
You started your career as a child and stopped it when you were 13. How do you compare being famous then and now?
My popularity is way different now. Being 13 years old is not the best age to become famous, it made me feel very insecure. Today I look at fame as something positive. I mean, if it weren’t for my fans, I would be jobless.
Exactly, the fans can be quite original in showing their affection. Do you receive any weird presents? Like bras or personal belongings?
I don’t even know because my manager protects me against such “challenges”.
Who among the cast of “True Blood” is your closest friend?
I love them all and naturally I play most of the scenes with Anna Paquin and Stephen, thus I spend most of the time on the set with them. The whole crew replaces a family for me, as I miss my relatives when I am far from Sweden.
How much time does it take to make one episode?
2.5 of a week. Most of the takes are filmed during night, so we work then and we sleep at day.
“True Blood” is full of erotica and violence. Are there any boundaries of showing violence you know you will never cross?
I am ready to move those boundaries. If you’ve seen season 2, you know what I’m talking about. I love such scenes.
What is your opinion on European and American approach to nudity?
It’s incredible that nudity is a taboo thing in the USA. On one hand, kids play very violent computer games and nobody pays any attention to it, but when a bit of woman breast is shown, it is treated as far worse crime than a murder. Besides, I also feel it in the interviews. In the USA people ask me “You played naked in a TV show?”. Yeah, so what?
You played in Lady Gaga’s clip for the song “Paparazzi”. How did you manage to do that?
The director, Jonas Akerlund is a good friend of mine, that is why he asked me to do it and I agreed. It was great fun.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?
I see myself as a happy guy. That would have been something. But I have no plans. I believe planning anything is risky. I surely would love to play in “True Blood” for few more years.
The vampire you play represents immortality. Would you like to live forever?
No. Living forever includes losing all your loved ones and it’s wonderful to have an opportunity to grow old together.
