Taking time off from the shoot, Lars von Trier yesterday held a press conference to announce the start of production on his sci-fi drama Melancholia.
The full roster of cast was revealed and included surprise additions Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, and Charlotte Rampling alonsgide Charlotte Gainsbourg, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård, Jesper Christensen, Udo Kier, Brady Corbet and Cameron Spurr.
Very few details were given but the director was typically sarcastic and dismissive of questions he found dull or unworthy. He joked that there’d be “No more happy endings” in his films, and revealed that there’s going to be a wedding in this storyline, with Kirsten Dunst’s character marrying Alexander Skarsgård’s. For all we know this wedding could be only a small part of the plot, or it could be the entire focus.
The film is shooting in Trollhättan with cinematographer Manuel Claro shooting the film digitally on the Arri Alexa camera. When Von Trier was asked how the film would look, he answered: Crap.
Gotta love him.
The film is due out in May or June next year in many or all of the 20 countries already with distribution deals in place. As far as I can discern, none of these territories are the US or the UK.
