Alexander Skarsgård attended the LA Times Indie Focus Screening of his film What Maisie Knew which was held at Laemmle NoHo 7 on Thursday (May 16) in North Hollywood, California.


Alexander was joined at the event by his co-star Onata Aprile, along with their directors Scott McGehee, David Siegel and LA Times writer Mark Olsen.

This week’s SkarsBuzz is a little short since I was late getting it out last week. As you may remember, I was in New York while Alex was there, so I missed a few of the news that came out at that time and will be posting it in this week’s edition.

What’s been happening this week…

Disconnect News

As you know, Disconnect is already playing in select theatres and thankfully the number of theatres grows every week. For being such a limited release, it’s done well. The film opened April 12th. Currently it expanded to 161 theatres and has a total gross of $1,055,000. It is the 18th popular movie currently showing in the US. [source]

A couple new stills were posted on the movie’s Facebook page. [also shown in gallery below]

According to @TweetLD, the film expanded to Kansas City, Albany, Charlotte, Honolulu, Knoxville, Madison, Orlando, Portland, Salt Lake City, Rochester, Laguna Beach, Columbus, Austin, St. Louis, Arlington, Pittsburgh. Check your local listings for more theatres.

I finally got to see it this weekend in Pittsburgh. It was only down to one cinema with 3 showings a day, so if you have the chance to see it, you better act fast. In my opinion, Alexander was wonderful as Derek Hull. The movie is much more dark and sad than I expected, but still a really good movie! I cared about all of the characters and each storyline was interesting. As for Alex’s performance, I found him totally believable as a sad “paper-pushing grunt who has lost connection with his wife. For some reason, they tried to make him, how shall I put this, “less hot.” It didn’t work. Even in dad jeans, baggy shirts and sweatpants he still looked as handsome as ever.

What Maisie Knew News

What Maisie Knew opened in New York on Friday, May 3rd at the Angelika Film Center. The night before the opening, the Sunshine Theatre held the special screening of the movie and Alexander was in attendance as well as Julianne Moore, Onata Aprile, Joanna Vanderham and directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel. The event was sponsored by The Cinema Society, Tod’s and GQ. After the screening, everyone headed over to Gallow Green at the McKittrick Hotel for the after-party. What Maisie Knew opened May 3, 2013 in only one theatre, The Angelika in New York City. It’s total gross was $21,480. [source]. Check below for other dates for the film. (There will be more, but these are the only ones known yet.)

Per Millennium Entertainment: The film will open on the West Coast in LA on May 17th and we’re expanding in NY this past weekend, still in the Angelika and adding Lincoln Center and Cinemas 1, 2 &3. The directors, Scott McGehee and David Siegel did more Q&As Wednesday and Thursday at the Angelika after the 7:40 shows.

You can preview & order the What Maisie Knew soundtrack here in the iTunes store. *I especially like the end song “Feeling of Being” by Lucy Schwartz. She recorded a special version of the song for the film.

The NY Times has a great article on the movie and a video that has directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel narrate a scene from the movie [which includes a shot of Lincoln (Alex) wearing only his boxer shorts]. You can watch it here.

You can watch a video of Julianne Moore singing “Hook and Line” by The Kills here. The footage was used in What Maisie Knew as she plays Susanna, a rock star mom.

The What Maisie Knew Facebook page posted an album of more photos from the NY special screening and after party.

MTV has a very cute article and video interview with Alex and Onata Aprile (recorded May 2 in New York).

MSN has a video from E! that has interviews with Julianne Moore, Onata April and Alex. Julianne says Alex is “warm, sensitive and friendly” in the movie and in real life “that is what he’s like. He is that lovely.”

The final book (Dead Ever After) in the “Southern Vampire Series” or “Sookie Stackhouse Novels” came out this week on Tuesday, May 7th. [Link to buy on Amazon.com] As you know, this is the final book in the series and the book that True Blood was based on. It has sadly been crucified by many fans. Please remember, without Charlaine Harris, there would have never been True Blood, or Eric Northman for that matter. We are eternally grateful to Charlaine for her writings and wish her all the best!

The True Blood season 5 Blu-ray/DVD combo will be released on May 21. You can pre-order it from HBO or Amazon.com. It doesn’t look like there will be commentary from Alex this time.

Magazine News

Man of the World is finally in stores and hopefully you have received your copies by now. Alex is on the cover and the photo spread on him is amazing by photographer Randall Mesdon.

Two new photos of Alex were tweeted this week from celebrity wardrobe stylist, Leila Baboi. The photos were taken at Fortune Gym a couple weeks ago (you can see the video with Alex in it from Fortune Gym here) and will *hopefully* be used for an upcoming magazine spread. Stay tuned!

Entertainment Weekly has  a first look of Stephen Moyer directing Anna Paquin on True Blood in their May 17th issue. (Photo below in the gallery)

ELLE (US) has a nice photo of Alexander Skarsgard and Brit Marling in their June issue.  They say that The East is a “trust us movie” – which means, go see it! (Photo below in the gallery)

Cute article from www.com: Skarsgård, who takes on a fatherly role to young Maisie in the film, said he is well-versed in dealing with children, despite having none of his own. “I got 300 younger siblings,” he said. “I come from a very big family. I’m the oldest — we didn’t fight much. I would grab [my younger brother Gus] by his ears and lift him.”

From Refinery29: What was it like playing a dad?
“It was a lot of fun. It was different for me. I thought it was just a different character. Someone who didn’t ask for this, you know? (Maisie is) obviously not his child and he didn’t expect this to happen. In the beginning of the film he’s kind of lost and doesn’t take care of himself. I think he’s very talented and smart, but he’s not very ambitious. It’s just out of kindness. His girlfriend is like, ‘I’m about to lose custody of my child, can you marry me please?’ And he’s like, ‘Okay.’ Then she’s not there, so he ends up in a weird situation with this little kid who no one takes care of.”

“I just thought it was a beautiful story of how he kind of falls in love with this little kid and how he learns to take care of someone for the first time in his life. And she kind of takes care of him, as well. He grows and matures quite a bit.” (read more at source)

Skarsgård’s portrayal of Lincoln is perhaps the most surprising and touching aspect of this saga. Susanna seems to pluck him from her crew of couch dwellers as an arbitrary step-parent. Alex appeared on the late night talk show ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’ on Friday, May 3rd. In case you missed it, you can check out the video and photos of the event here.  Sidenote: I was able to attend the taping and have some insight on the taping and tips for scoring standby tickets to the LNJF.

Alexander Skarsgård made his second appearance on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon‘ on Friday, May 3, 2013. The show is shot in Studio 6B at Rockefeller Center in New York, NY. Alex was in town for the ‘What Maisie Knew’ premiere and to promote the film. The film is in limited release in NY now but will be expanding to more theatres in the weeks to come.

Other guests on the show: Carey Mulligan promoting her film “The Great Gatsby”. John Densmore of The Doors promoting his book “Unhinged”. John played drums while Jimmy did his best Jim Morrisson singing The Doors’ “Let it Roll”. Eve promoted her new album “Lip Lock” which is her first album in 11 years. It will be released on May 14th. She sang “Make it Out This Town” with Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta. Plus Jimmy always does his Thank You Notes on Fridays.

Jimmy Fallon asked Alex about the roll out with his grandma since that’s what they talked about on his last visit in August 2011. He also asked about the bird tattoo that Alex’s younger brother Valter drew 8 years ago. They quickly talk True Blood and ‘What Maisie Knew’. They show the crayons scene from the movie. If you are wondering why Alex looks so closely at Jimmy’s face in the beginning – Jimmy told the story of dropping his iPhone on his face while in bed that morning and he had to go to the hospital to get stitches. The song that The Roots played when Alex walked out was Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go”. Tack to Peyton for reminding me that is the song playing when Meekus (Alex) is at the gas station in Zoolander.

I was fortunate to get standby tickets for the taping of ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’. Let me tell you it is not easy! There is lots of standing in line, checking in, checking in again, more lines, waiting, hoping, praying…but well worth it if you get picked to attend. [Tickets are handed out at 9:00 .a.m., so we got there at 6:30 a.m. and were 5th & 6th in line. You have to stand the entire time, (no sitting!) They do let you leave and come back if you have someone to watch your place. We checked in around 3:00 p.m. at another place. You have to show your standby ticket with the number on it. Then they ask you to come back to another place at 4:15 sharp—not a minute before or they’ll tell you to keep walking. They finally announce you can line up and they do it in numbered order of the standby tickets. We were fortunate they took 24 people. The day before someone said they took zero. Then you have to go upstairs and wait in another line at least a half hour. They seat the people first with show tickets, and the standby people are last on benches in the back. The studio is small and very cold, but you can see everything very well.]

The show is a very well-oiled machine. After the audience is ushered in to their seats, a comedian comes out to warm up the crowd. Seth Herzog was the comedian on Friday. We’re not sure if he was kidding or just misinformed, but when he was announcing who all would be on the show, he said Alex was from ‘Twilight’. Other than that, he was very funny. They introduced announced Steve Higgins (LOVE him!) and the greatest band in late night, The Roots (INCREDIBLE). They came out in style playing a song. Seth joined in with them as well.
The show started and Steve announced Jimmy to come out. During the “commercial” breaks several people came out to set up the next thing and reapply makeup. I was very happy to see the puppy skit for the Kentucky Derby prediction. Jimmy kept holding the puppy (Barry Frick) afterwards and didn’t want to give it up.

There were a couple things that they didn’t show when he interviewed Alex. When Jimmy first brings up Alex’s brother, Alex didn’t know which one he was talking about (that part went a little longer than shown on TV). Also, when Jimmy asked what kind of reaction he got from his brother when first seeing the tattoo, Alex said “I got shit”. (Not that Valter said “shit”, it was that it was a shitty reaction.) Also, Jimmy asked how far away Sweden is from LA Alex couldn’t answer. It was very tempting to watch the monitors to see a better close-up of Alex, but since I could see him on TV any time, I tried to just watch him on the stage. They talked to each other a little during the movie clip, but you couldn’t hear what they said. They must have removed one of the blue seat cushions for him because they brought it back out for the next guest. Jimmy always runs up the stairs and slaps the hands of the audience members on the ends. They don’t always show it on air, but he does it. Very lovely guy. He slapped me & my friend’s hands and told us “thanks for coming”. (Total dream come true for me.) Eve was really cool and lovely. She sang an extra song that wasn’t aired. She sang “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” which was originally sung with Gwen Stefani. The show started around 5:30 p.m. and was over around 7:00 p.m. Long process, but well worth it if you are a fan.

My tickets – you have to turn in the blue one, but they let you keep the standby one and you also get a paper wristband that says ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’ on it.

I (Jody) have been a True Blood/Alexander Skarsgård fan since January 2010 (late to the game, I know). I’ve had the pleasure of working on the fan sites TrueBlood-News.com (from October 2010 to September 2012) and AlexSkarsgard.Net (from November 2011 to present) which has only helped fuel my fire. I’ve also been a fan of Jimmy Fallon’s since James van der Beek hosted Saturday Night Live in 1998 when Jimmy was only a featured player. I have watched every episode of SNL with Jimmy on it, his movies and record and watch Late Night with Jimmy Fallon since it first began.

I had the opportunity to acquire passes to the What Maisie Knew special screening (premiere) and after party in New York and I had to go for it. I booked my 3-day trip to NY before I had the passes in hopes things would work out. If I couldn’t get in, I’d just try to take photos of Alex going to the premiere and do some site-seeing and watch Disconnect & What Maisie Knew since they weren’t playing in my hometown. Then it was announced that Alex would be a guest on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on May 3^rd (the day after the special screening). As I had thought about trying to score standby tickets to that too, I knew I HAD to try if Alex was going to be on as a guest.

Long story short, I won the passes. My friend and I made our way to New York and went to the Sunshine theatre. (After meeting our new friend from TBConfidential!) The event was sponsored by The Cinema Society, Tod’s and GQ. They had cute GQ & Tod’s M&M’s, bottled water and popcorn. It was exciting to be “on the list” of a NY premiere. We made our way down to where the “red carpet” was. It was  very small room. The floor was lined with names of who would be interviewing the cast & crew (Variety, US Weekly, NY Times, etc.) We were eventually shooed away since the room was so small so we went in to the theatre to take our seats. The majority of them were reserved with names on them. There was an entire row of “Skarsgård” seats. Onata Aprile had the entire row in front of him. We did spot some celebrities in the audience. We sat closest to Russell Simons and Onata. The directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel came out and introduced the cast in attendance: Onata Aprile, Joanna Vanderham, Alexander Skarsgård, and Julianne Moore. We all watched the movie and the crowd had a good reaction to the funny scenes and extra-sweet ones.

After the movie, we saw a few celebrities in the ladies room and standing around outside. It’s wild to be in the bathroom with model Caroline Wineberg and Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna on Girls) at the same time, then to walk out and see Onata Aprile (Maisie) and Sadie Rae (Zoe from the movie) walking hand-in-hand on their way in. Then to turn the corner and see Nikolaj Coster Waldau (Jamie Lannister from Game of Thrones). Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones) was outside talking photos with fans.

So we made our way to the party at the Gallow Green (on the rooftop of the McKittrick Hotel) which is the same place the Calvin Klein Encounter launch party was held in the fall. We weren’t sure which line was the correct place, but we saw Alex walking down the street so we went to that one. Turns out, he was being taken into a special entrance so we went back to the other line and checked in. Because it was on rooftop, we all needed to wait on the elevator. Alison Mosshart from the Kills, Niko and Caroline were also waiting outside. (Although I think Niko gave up…he didn’t want to wait.)

“Don’t Fear the Reaper” was playing when we were walking into the party. It was a very nice night and lovely to be on a rooftop with the rest of NYC in the background. We grabbed our complementary cocktails and set out to find a very tall and handsome Swede! Alex was everywhere…being pulled in every direction, but being very accommodating. Just when we thought we had him he was pulled away to do the publicity photos with Julianne, Onata & Joanna. We got to stand very closeby when this was happening and it was quite fun. Afterwards we finally got our chance to get our photos with Alex. He was super nice (as we’ve always heard from other fans). My friend got her photos, then he was pulled away so I had to wait longer (which really wasn’t bad standing there next to him longer, I must admit. Plus it was the girls from Swedish duo Icona Pop so it was actually cool.) When I got my turn, I told him I was an admin for this fan site and work with Jenna. His eyes lit up and said “That’s great! Thank you for all of the hard work you do.” (That was a surprise, I didn’t expect him to thank ME.) When we left he said to “tell Jenna I said hi”. It was very sweet. We got to chat with a few other people and there were some really random celebrities there. I did get to speak with both directors and I have to say Scott McGehee was the sweetest guy! Everyone was appreciative for the support of their movie. Before we left I went over to Alex one more time (to get a good photo of him by himself) and he was very accommodating. But I messed up the smiling photo so I asked to take another. He didn’t smile, so I told him about it and then he gave me a big cheesy smile, grabbed my arm and rubbed it a couple times and said “thanks very much.” He then walked over and gave a hug to his Generation Kill co-star Mark Menchaca (Sgt. Mike ‘Gunny’ Wynn). Sooo wish I took a pic of that! But I went to join my friend at the bench by the bar and snuck a pic of Penn Badgley and Richard Kind who were standing in front of us. We were both very tired (long day of travel, etc.) so we left around 12 (before Alex).

We needed to get back to the hotel because we had to be up at 5:30 to get ready to get in line for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon standby tickets. We ended up staying up til 2:30 so the 3 hours of sleep didn’t do us much good. We caught a cab & was at 30 Rock before 6:30. We were 5^th & 6^th in line. I got to sit a bit until the cop came and said we all had to stand. My friend went over to see Psy do his performance for the Today Show around the corner. Surprisingly, the time went by fast. We waited until 9:00 to get our standby tickets (each had a number in order you were in line). [If you do this, be sure to bring your driver’s license with you, they want to see it!] We were asked to come back later. We checked in in another area at 3:00 and still had to come back at 4:15 to get in line. NOTE: They will NOT let you loiter around waiting to get in line. You cannot show up until 4:15 on the dot. Then they ask you to get in line with your ticket. We were very fortunate that they took 24 people in to see the show. The guy that stood in line with us said he went the day before and they didn’t let ANYONE in, so there is no guarantees. It was a cute little interview but way too short.

As I mentioned before, I’m not only an Alex fan but a Jimmy Fallon fan too. It was a dream come true to be in his studio, with The Roots and Steve Higgins and Barry Frick the adorable puppy. Jimmy always runs up the stairs around the studio to slap hands of the audience members that are sitting on the end (or can reach over). I got to touch him and he leaned over and said “thank you for coming” to both my friend and I. Such a thrill!

After the taping, my friend and I went separate ways. I headed off to the 7:40 showing of What Maisie Knew at the Angelika Theatre where there would be a Q&A afterwards with the directors David & Scott and star Joanna Vanderham. Joanna was a little late for the Q&A because she was at an incredible dinner. One of the audience members asked why/how they came to chose Alex for the part of Lincoln. They said the casting director suggested it and so they watched a lot of True Blood. They didn’t see Lincoln in Eric Northman, but they watched him in Zoolander and knew that he could be funny. When they met with him they said he had “such a gentleness and expressed he loved children.” Plus they thought it would be funny to see a very tall guy with a tiny little girl. Joanna talked about doing some improve with Alex in a couple of scenes. One was when they are talking at the bar on the couch. She said they were instructed to just talk, but she didn’t feel comfortable and asked to have something written. So the scene was written, but Alex didn’t like it and he just improved it asking her questions (he asked about her Scottish accent). The scene at the lake with the turtles was also improved. She said she basically was just reacting to whatever Alex said (about getting bit by a turtle and having a scar from it.)

It was quite an Alex weekend, and it was capped off by the True Blood trailer being released as I was in the van driving around NYC on my way to the airport. As a web admin, that is NOT good timing. But I got it posted and tweeted, thanks to my iPad. Eric Northman crisis adverted!

My New York experience was quite lovely and I hope everyone gets to go at least once. I especially recommend chasing your dreams…never did I think meeting Alex and being at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon would be a reality for me, but both came true within 24 hours of each other. I do NOT recommend stalking though.

True Blood/HBO released the new trailer of Season 6 yesterday (May 4, 2013). Lots of Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) this time!!

True Blood season 6 will air on HBO starting Sunday, June 16, 2013.
